Where it came from
This instrument is an adaptation of the Digital Maturity Assessment methodology co-developed by Nicholas Scott with colleagues at Think Digital Associates in 2023. ShiftFlow has adapted it for self-serve use and updated it for the AI era.
The original methodology is the work of a team; this adaptation does not replace it. Organizations that want the original full-scope consulting engagement should go to Think Digital Associates directly. What we offer here is a self-serve starting point.
Named contributors to the 2023 methodology will be listed here once Nicholas confirms the final list.
What we updated
We did not add an “AI” category. That would contradict the firm's stance that AI is not exceptional — it is the current instance of a pattern that goes back decades.
Instead, we evolved the existing categories where AI has changed what they demand. Governance grew to hold AI ethics questions. People grew to include AI literacy. User-Centered grew to cover human–AI interaction. The structure is intact. The substance caught up.
